Happy New Year! Since people are far away, I'm going to ask: Angpau kia lai! Sio bak oso can, it being the year of the pig (sorry, pig!). My New Year's Eve celebration: Starting the day by meeting a Msian who was visiting a Burmese friend of mine - he goes to Dartmouth, was at UWC New Mexico and knows Saovanee... Played host till lunchtime, wandering over to Where'd You Get That? (Spring St. novelty store), the College Art Museum then to the newly opened Student Centre for lunch, which was quite decent. Then, an hour and a bit of practicing Harbison and Shostakovich, Andriessen rehearsal, and off to fence. Got in 3 bouts, each with a new fencer (won all 10-1... heheheh.), then back to shower, have dinner, sneak some veg out of Greylock to cook tomorrow and then to Chapin for the Symph Winds concert "Feminine Beginnings". Musical pun there, be embarrassed if you understand it. First half, in which I didn't play, sounded good - singers were artfully placed around the balconies in Chapin, providing interesting sound for the Hildegard chants. Second half involved Joan Tower's (brief) "Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman", "Oh Ken" (sung by a doll... no really. Think about 'Ken'.), "Dulcissime" and "Ave Formossissima" from Carmina Burana leading into Andriessen's "Hadewijch". Hadewijch went beautifully - really smooth compared to a couple of the rehearsals. It was pleasing, as was the post-concert pizza. :) I have half a pizza in my common room awaiting a slightly more permanent home.
Itinerary for tomorrow: get up, read a little Berkeley, probably, maybe sneak some time to look at an intractable integral (RNA pseudoknot probability... we're halfway to getting it), cook lunch, eat lunch, something (depending on how long post-lunch chatting goes on), Student Symphony rehearsal, practice Chausson and Shostakovich and sight-read Mozart (I think), then dinner before Berkshire rehearsal. Thank goodness I got Physics 202 homework done last weekend, I'd be dead otherwise.
Yeah... have better CNYs than me. Actually you probably have already. It'll be fun, whatever the case. I finally was paid for my last timecard, thankfully, so my monetary woes are diminishing. A couple more decent timecards will be going in this week. Yay.
I'll go see how Berkely is.
